The semblance of love

The semblance of love
August 15, 2014
By: Gina Yoryet Roman

“It is not negotiable, nor is it relative, but absolute.”
'Semper Fidelis,' is more than a fancy slogan. It is truly a way of life. "Always faithful." It isn't "Sometimes Faithful." Nor is it "Usually Faithful...

Ever since I was a teenager, I was always in love; I was enamored with life, my family, my friends, my loved ones, my surroundings, and with the beauty of nature. Yet, I longed for the love of my blue prince. After many years of trial and error, of being temporarily bent, my wounded and wrung out heart, made a steadfast come back, and here I am, a survivor. Now, in exactly a day and half, I will be in the arms of my soul mate, my TRUE love, the one I had awaited for, all my life. When love first re-appeared on my door earlier this year, I was incognizant to that warm and tender, yet somewhat repressed feeling within, that I became a bit distraught for the sake of fear...

That brief episode of denial only lasted a few days, until I had a face-off with Gina Yoryet and decided to accept it embrace it, and be thankful for this new God given opportunity.  I’ve emphasized to him that the long hiatus that I took, was worth every single second of it because our paths have finally crossed. The moment couldn’t have been any more perfect for our longing souls.

Right now I am caught amidst frenzy, excitement, joy, victory and hope. Now that love is knocking on my door stronger than ever (and I hope till the end of time), why not give it another shot when I was least expecting it? Why not walk hand in hand till one of us expires? Why not just let it flow? 'Carpe Diem,' Enjoy the pleasures of the moment, without concern of what the future holds for us? Why not put aside all differences, fears and worries and just go for it?

I am a bit flabbergasted because I know that it won’t be easy for a number of reasons (NOT because we don’t love each other), but due to the small, but not impossible obstacles lying ahead of us. For the first time in my life though, I’ve mellowed down, and I am giving all of me (I want this man’s last name, his babies. I yearn to be his loyal and loving wife); my mind, body, heart and soul, I want to work at loving him every single day, I want to think about what is the best for ‘us’ under any circumstances, I’ve already decided to love and respect him every single day of my life. For the first time EVER, it will be, ‘us,’ ‘we,’ as opposed to, ‘I,’ ‘me.’ These seeds that I am planting slowly and thoroughly, will keep the spark alive twenty, thirty, forty years down the line.

I want to have the same type of love grandpa Hal and grandma Mary Lou professed to each other more than fifty years ago until death separated them. And only then will I look back and pride myself that I accomplished another one of my victories.

I yearn to growing old with J. V. A. because there couldn’t have been anyone better than him for me, or anyone better for him than me.

Therefore, it is now that I’ve decided to start a new episode in my existence and 'Semper Fidelis,' be loyal to him for the rest of our lives. All the emotions and excitement stirring inside, are the realization that have led me to unleash all the repressed feelings and celebrate…

Love

The love that I have always believed in…
The TRUE love that I’ve finally encountered..
The love that can be manifested in so many ways now that the man of my dreams is walking with me hand in hand till the end of time.

I love you J. V. A.!

Of compassion, generosity, unpretentiousness and love

Of compassion, generosity, unpretentiousness and love
August 12, 2014
By: Gina Yoryet Roman

This morning I was awakened by the voice on the radio reporting Robin William’s death. Apparently he had been battling severe depression, according to his publicist. Every time I hear of a celebrity or someone dealing with depression, alcohol or drug problems, I find it very hard for it to sink in. What amazes me the most, is that life can be very burlesque as we are constantly associated with tragedy, sadness, loss and emptiness. On the other hand, we also criss-cross joy, happiness, fulfillment, victory, hope and faith.

The irony of it all is that there isn´t one single soul who doesn´t encounter stumbling blocks amidst the tempest filled with disappointment and often times, we don’t know how to bounce back. Earlier this year, I was asked by a friend who lost her father last year, “is it possible to fill a void after we are smashed by tragedy?” The answer to that, is that we are never the same but as harsh as it may sound, we have to deal with it, grieve, accept, and let go. Like they say, whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger...
Or so, some become more solid, unlike many others. Since this morning that I heard the news, I felt a knot in my throat and had to fight back crying. I instead breathed heavily and prayed that his restless soul finds peace in another life.

Back in 1998, when he starred in Patch Adams, a semi-biographical comedy drama-film, in which he touched the lives of millions of people, his love and care towards humanity was depicted.
Obama stated, "Williams arrived in our lives as an alien - but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit.” “He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most - from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets.”

Unfortunately, he is/was not the only one who has undergone that painful trial. What about those involved in those people’s lives, the closest people to them, their loved ones? Where were are they as their mental health starts declining? It is our sole duty to seek help, pray, have faith and be assured that sooner or later, somewhere along the line, we will be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

After all, isn’t this world about compassion, generosity, unpretentiousness and love?
Ralph Waldo Emerson once aforesaid, “Nature magically suits a man to his fortunes, by making them the fruit of his character...”

God bless his soul and relatives in grief!

A good diet Makes a SUBSTANTIAL difference

A good diet Makes a SUBSTANTIAL difference

Truth
This is a VERY true verdict

Towards the end of July, when I last stepped on the scale, I was exactly 106 pounds and a few trousers that still fit me but made my muffin top spill, fit very loose now. All through June and at the beginning of July, I was mortified and very displeased (and depressed because this long-term injury has invalided me from all high-rendering routines whatsoever) after finding out that my weight had soared to 112 pounds. 112 may sound very light to the majority of the population worldwide, but I have to bear in mind that I am only 5’2. Although according to the BMI (Body Mass Index chart), someone at 5’2 would have to be between 108-149 pounds.

Anything over 112 is out of control for me, I cannot handle a lot of anything. I have always lived by the principle of too much of anything invades me with anxiety and stress. This doctrine includes weight.

That’s why despite my deterring, (yet temporary) impairment, I predetermined myself to shed off some stubborn pounds. Realistically speaking and without pressuring my body, I tackled that daunting issue and looked for a few possible alternatives to reach my goal , the same way I did when I decided to become a professional runner, or when I became interested in modeling and I achieved it, in the same manner I became a fitness authority, and I have held that title for many years now, and last but not least, when I reached one of my long-sought victories after telling two people ten years ago that I wanted to write a book.  It sure took me long but I prevailed. I FINALLY co-authored a book (this is the landmark for a few more to come). That achievement was one of my childhood dreams turned into passion, a passion diverted into reality. A verdict that reveals my essence and proves that obstacles are nothing but tiny matters.

I am sure put off by all the hampering interruptions in this cajoling circle of life, the same way I am terrified by eating vegetables and being disciplined because I have NEVER liked veggies so at times it can be really hard to remain disciplined.

The last few weeks though, I have had to re-modify my nutrition and that’s what’s kept the pounds off. I’ve learned that as long as I fill my fridge with good food, my tummy will be satisfied with a transparent diet. That has avoided me from buying junk at the super market the last couple of days that I’ve gone grocery shopping. I love it!

BUT before I go on with clean eating! I am going to get my hands on a few taquitos because I have not had ANY Mexican food since July 30, and I won’t have any until after the 18. SO! delicious taquitos, hold on tight because here I come!!

The risks of overweight and obesity

The risks of overweight and obesity
Broadcasted live on Thursday July 24, 2014
August 6, 2014
By Gina Yoryet Roman

On March 29, 2011, my sister and I, were invited as contributing authors to write about the Impact of Physical Inactivity. Back then, I was very predetermined because I was injury free (or I made myself believe that it was), and my fitness level was soaring, getting closer to its best ever.

Running Ahead: The Impact of Physical Inactivity
Gina Yoryet Román with the contribution of Tamar Roman-Jorgensen
Research done for California State University of Sacramento
Original investigation and written date: March 29, 2011

Introduction
The miraculous anatomy of the human body unlike any other species is designed for complex daily physical activities. The multiple and often simultaneous physiological responses that take place in response to physical activity affect virtually all the body’s systems in a favorable way. In fact, many research studies have found conclusive evidence that being physically active has substantial physical as well as psychological benefits (U.S Department of Health and Human Services [USDHHS], 2008, Healthy People 2010 [HP 2010]).

Two years later, I still can’t pull through this injury, this NEVER ending hiatus that is taking the best of me and sometimes I am unable to see the light at the end of the tunnel. At times I want to wake up tomorrow and get in sync with life sans pain. Unfortunately at this moment, I am unbeknownst to that but I am determined to get there whatever it takes!

Especially now that after deeply reflecting, I decided to take a break from the gym and work out at home and/or look for other low-intensity physical activities such as walking. And so I have, amidst my physical and emotional turmoil...

As much as my deceitful mind and my ready to drop body indicate me to stay home and be sluggish, I ponder about this:
in fact, many research studies have found conclusive evidence that being physically active has substantial physical as well as psychological benefits

I’ve managed to do power walks. I’ve been spending a substantial amount of time with my nephews and with their doggie so between the three of them, it’s been nonstop the last seven days.

In addition to thinking about the benefits of being physically active, I also think about the negative impact of overweight and obesity, which I discussed on the radio talk I was broadcasted on Simplemente Adriana, 105.9 FM, on Thursday July 24, 2014.

The Health Effects of Overweight and Obesity
http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/effects/
Research has shown that as people become "overweight" and "obese,"* their risk for developing the following conditions increases:1
Coronary heart disease
Type 2 diabetes
Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
Hypertension (high blood pressure)
Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
Stroke
Liver and Gallbladder disease
Sleep apnea and breathing problems
Osteoarthritis (a breakdown of cartilage and bone within a joint)
Gynecological problems (abnormal periods, infertility)

I am constantly daunted by these health issues, that’s why since my early health and fitness career, when I was fifteen or sixteen, I have had a daily face off with them for the sake of another one of my victories - to be healthy, and in order to change my life and that of others.

I only pray God to give me physical and emotional strength to stay put...
